Auto Insurance Penalties In Hawaii Are Among Highest In The Nation |
Thursday, April 14, 2016 |
Hawaii drivers will see their insurance surge far more than their Mainland peers for moving violations, according to a new study.
Reckless driving in the Aloha State will hike a driver’s insurance premium 290.68 percent, according to the Moving Violations report. This is the largest increase in the nation.
Meanwhile, a DUI/DWIs in the state could cause premiums to jump 293.79 percent. This is second only to North Carolina, where drivers face a 333.85 percent increase.
Hawaii driver’s face also face a 40.61 percent increase if they speed 31 mph or more over the speed limit, the report found. This ranks the state 7th in the nation.
“Insurers base their rates on experience, so the violations that cause premiums to jump the most are the ones that, over the years, insurers have found are strong indicators that the driver is likely to have an accident in the future,” said Mike Barry, spokesman for the nonprofit Insurance Information Institute. “Seen that way, this study makes a lot of sense.” |
